Melany Emery

Melany Standafer Emery, 54, went home in peace to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. She was born in Charleston, SC to Carl Edward and Brenda Collins Sykes. She was the wife of James (Jim) D. Emery who survives.
Melany was a gifted vocalist from an early age, and she used her gift often in the service of her Lord Jesus Christ, singing for years in her home church, Trinity Worship Center, as well as in other churches for worship services, weddings and funerals. She was a loving and devoted wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and friend pouring her life and talents into those around her. Even after being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1996, she invested herself in living out her beliefs by serving others through visiting shut-ins, singing at nursing homes, and co-teaching bible studies and a marriage class with her husband.
Melany also loved animals, rescuing and adopting a number of dogs and one cat. She was a talented decorator and particularly enjoyed looking for just the right picture or accent piece to add warmth and beauty to her home. During her marriage to Jim, she also came to enjoy traveling, taking a number of exciting trips within the U.S. and to several international destinations. She enjoyed most of all the trips in which she was able to see her son Jacob using his own vocal talent.
Melany earned a BA degree from Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL in 1988. After college, she returned to Alamance County where she taught for more than twelve years, winning teacher of the year at both Woodlawn and Western Alamance Middle Schools. She was also a co-winner of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce's "Excellence in Education Award" in 1992.
In addition to her husband, Melany is survived by her parents, both of Burlington; son, Jacob G. Standafer and fiancée, Erin Parker, of Denver, Colorado; grandson, Hudson G. Standafer of Denver, Colorado; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Lynn Sykes of Burlington; nieces Loryn and Lindsey Sykes, also of Burlington.
A service to celebrate Melany's life will be held at 2pm on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Trinity Worship Center officiated by Rev. Darrell Cox and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 pm to 6pm at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory on Saturday, January 20, 2018.
The family would like to thank Melany's friends and the pastors and congregation of Trinity Worship Center for their loving prayers and support over the years. The family would also like to thank the caregivers at Duke University Medical Center and the Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell for the excellent care and loving support they provided to Melany.
