May Bland Winstead, 101, a resident of Edgewood Place, died on Wednesday, July 2, 2014 in Burlington, North Carolina. She was a former resident of Saddle Club Villas for over 20 years, and previously at Twin Lakes Assisted Living, both in Burlington. The daughter of the late Charles Andrew and Edna Marks Bland, she was born on February 4, 1913 in Wadesboro, North Carolina and graduated from Queens University in Charlotte and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A teacher in the Person County school system for 33 years, she retired in 1965 and moved to Burlington in 1977 after her husband's death. At the time of her death, Mrs. Winstead was the only living charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Chi Chapter teachers' sorority in Roxboro and a former member of the Burlington Eta Chapter of ADK. She was also a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Founders and Patriots Chapter of the North Carolina Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century. In addition, she was a Pink Lady volunteer at Memorial Hospital, a volunteer at the Alamance Historical Museum for many years, and a member of the Centennial Garden Club. A longtime Methodist, she was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Roxboro and Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington, where she was a member of the Women of the Church and the Fannie Larkin Sunday School Class. Mrs. Winstead is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William C. Bill Winstead, Jr. and Janet M. Winstead; her grandson, William C. Chip Winstead, III and his wife, Leslie; and one great-grandson, Aidan Winstead of Burlington. She is also survived by a niece, Barbara Denton Biddix of Charlotte N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Winstead, Sr.; her parents; a sister, Castelloe Bland Denton Dowling of Charlotte; a brother, Charles A. Bland, Jr. of Wadesboro, and her nephew, Graham Williams Denton, Jr. of Charlotte. A private family memorial service was held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the W.C. Winstead crypt at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery in Roxboro, North Carolina on Highway 57 North near Hyco Lake. Lowe Funeral Home of Burlington is serving the family of Mrs. Winstead. Box 2526, Burlington, N.C. 27216; or a favorite charity. The family will be at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Janet Winstead, of Gibsonville, N.C.
