Mary Lou Oakes McLean

Mary Lou Oakes McLean, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at her residence.  She was born in Virginia to the late Curtis and Etta McCrickard Oakes and was married to the late Herman Eugene “Butch” McLean. 

She was a lifetime member of Glen Hope Baptist Church and her parents were founding members of the church.  Mary Lou served for several years as the church historian and was active in women’s missions.  She was a great cook, loved sewing for her family, and enjoyed doing puzzles and word searches.  Mary Lou was a loving, caring and devoted, wife and mother, but her greatest joy was being a Nannie to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet Carroll (Monte Miller), Vernell Miller-Sealey (Michael), Lyndia McLean, Sherry McVicker (Tim); grandchildren, Michelle Beckom, Michael Hairr, Ashley Carroll, McKay Ragan (Kelly Hill), Caison McVicker (Callie), Connor McVicker (Katrina); great grandchildren, Caroline Ragan, Brantley McVicker, Ashton McVicker; brother-in-law, Ralph Ingle and sister-in-law, Patricia Oakes.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-law, Randy Neal Miller, two brothers, one sister and her in-laws, Lula Belle and Willis Burdette “W.B.” McLean.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bob Stephenson with burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45 PM Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Burlington, NC.
