Mary Guthrie Smith, 80, of Siler City went home to be with our Lord and Savior on May 16th, 2019 at the Hospice Home in Burlington.
A native of Alamance County, Mary was born November 16, 1938 to Herbert Taft Guthrie and Allene (Thompson) Guthrie, both deceased. On December 20, 1969 she married Robert D. Smith and enjoyed thirty-three years together before his passing.
She is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Stuart Ingle of Siler City, Wanda Stuart of Durham, and Michelle Smith and husband David of Snow Camp; four sisters, Peggy Rich of Burlington, Claudette Stout of Graham, Lillie Holt and husband Willie of Snow Camp, and Nina Greeson and husband Scott of Haw River; two grandsons, Wes Ingle and wife Ashley of Greensboro and Josh Ingle and wife Danielle of Siler City; three great-granddaughters, Sydney, Ella Paige, and Sawyer. Mary was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Dodson of Haw River and her twin, Martha McVey of Snow Camp.
Mary was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church and enjoyed baking pies and cakes for events and fundraisers. She was always quick to help out any family or church member or friend in need. Mary’s help often included visiting and bringing some of her good country cooking, like fried okra, pinto beans and country style steak. She was a hard worker all of her life whether at her job or at home. She took pride in keeping her yard in perfect condition. She retired from Acme-McCrary and then worked part time as a "Dumpster Deputy" at the Chatham County Recycling Center. She loved fishing and eating her catches, whether brim from the pond or spots from the sea. In her younger years, you could find Mary at the local dance hall listening to Elvis or maybe square dancing. Mary took pleasure in her computer by playing cards with her sisters, working on badges on Wednesdays, and liking all the pictures of family and friends on social media. Mary enjoyed her camper at Holden Beach and going out on the boats to play the slots. Most of all, Mary loved her family. She cherished cooking for them, especially Sunday lunches and on all the holidays. Her joy the past two years was babysitting her great-granddaughter, Sawyer.
The memorial service will be at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, 3631 Mt. Vernon Hickory Mountain Road, Siler City on Sunday, May 19th at 3:00 PM. The Rev. Jason Dickerson will be presiding. The family will receive friends before the service at 2:00 PM in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the family home. A private burial will be at the church cemetery after the memorial.
In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be made to Mt. Vernon UMC Memorial Fund C/O Teresa Piezzo 61 Royal Pines Court, Pittsboro, NC 27312. The family would like to thank everyone that called, visited, sent cards, sat with Mary or brought food during her illness. A special thank you is extended to the staff of the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell.
