Mary Louise Cox George, 77, of Liberty, North Carolina, passed away Friday, August 21, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
Louise, or “Nana”, was born March 20, 1943 in Clinton, NC. She was a proud North Carolinian who lived in the Tar Heel State her whole life. Despite her love of home, she was an avid traveler, embarking on a couple cross-country trips with her late husband, Sidney George, Sr., in their RV. Louise enjoyed soaking in the sights of states in the American West, with a particular affection for Deadwood, South Dakota.
She was a patron for many years at the biannual Bluegrass festivals held at Bass Mountain. If you visited Bass Mountain on Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend any given year, you likely saw Louise seated in the crowd, tapping her foot to match the rhythm of her beloved Bluegrass tunes. Her favorite North Carolina beach to visit was Emerald Isle, where she was a regular visitor along the Crystal Coast shores during the fall.
Louise had a charismatic personality that people were gravitated to. There wasn’t anyone she couldn’t strike up a conversation with, and she made friends everywhere she went. Her loyalty to her friends was only outmatched by her passion for her family. She was known among loved ones to be an excellent cook, with a penchant for making her famous fried chicken and macaroni and cheese. She also was an enthusiastic baker, regularly trying out new recipes to craft sweet creations to entice friends and family with.
Louise is survived by her son, Sidney George Jr.; her daughter, Lisa Martinez and husband, Robert; her brother, Robert Cox and wife, Kathy; her sister Wanda Shelar and husband, Hal; her loving grandchild, Logan Martinez and wife, Alexandria Ugarte; and several nieces and nephews.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Hovie and Hazel Cox; and husband, Sidney George, Sr.
There will be private services held at a later date.
