Burlington, NC Mary Lou Barker West Baer, age 82 went home to be with her Lord after an eight year battle with ovarian cancer. A native of St. Albans, West Virginia, she was the only child of the late Charles William Barker, JR. and Madeleine Coleman Barker of Charleston, W. Va. She was a graduate of Charleston High School and attended Morris Harvey College, now the University of Charleston, where she was a member of Sigma Iota Chi Sorority. She was the former owner of NuWay Dry Cleaners before moving to Burlington. Survivors include her husband of 30 years, George Edward Baer, son Kim William West of San Francisco, California, and daughter Karen West Comfort of Durham, North Carolina. Mrs. Baer was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church where she served as Church Hostess for 15 years and taught pre-school 4-5 year old Sunday School for 17 years. She was also a member of the BYKOTE Sunday School Class. Community service was an important part of Mrs. Baer's life. She was a founding member of the Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell County and served on the board of Directors for the Hospice Golf Classic. She was a volunteer at Good Shepherd Kitchen and Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Baer was also a member of the Alamance Regional Medical Auxiliary serving in the Cancer Center for 13 years. A service to celebrate her life will be conducted Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Hunsinger, Rev. Roger Roach and Rev. Bill Vickrey. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Duke Cancer Center, the Hospice Home Care Nurses and the Hospice Home nurses and staff for all the loving attention and support given to Mrs. Baer and her family. Memorials may be made to Hospice League of Alamance Caswell , Hospice and Pallative Care of Alamance - Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, North Carolina, 27215, or the Patricia Bynum Fund through the Charitable Foundation of Alamance Regional Medical Center.
