Mary Magdalene McDaniel Atkins, age 78, passed away at ARMC in Burlington, NC on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 after several months of failing health. Born on July 15, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Harry Lewis McDaniel, Sr. and the late Bleka Wike McDaniel. A graduate of Taylorsville High School in Alexander County, she worked many years in the textile industry and later retired from Twin Lakes Community Healthcare in the laundry department. Mary happily resided in the town of Ossipee since 1968, where she previously served as a commissioner for the Ossipee Sanitary District and was a faithful watchwoman over the Ossipee Town Hall. Her greatest pleasures in life were sitting on her porch when weather permitted, talking on the telephone and listening to her scanner. She always welcomed visits from her Grand dog Brownie and the neighbors and friends who assisted Jan and Tony with her care during her years of declining eyesight and health. Mary was predeceased in death by her late husband Hardie Lee "Pop" Atkins, Father of Janet "Jan" Atkins Barker of Burlington and Anthony Lee "Tony" Atkins of the home. She is also survived by a sister, Kay Pace of Taylorsville and her husband, David and family and a brother, Lewis McDaniel and his wife Carol of Morganton and family. Janet's family includes her husband, Donald "Lynn" Barker and sons Matt Barker & Adam Barker and his wife Ashley and daughter Laney. Tony's family includes Robbin Stallings Atkins and daughter Emily Atkins and son Christopher "Todd"Atkins and his wife Jenny and son Carson. Mary is survived by other members of the McDaniel and Wike family whom she always enjoyed visits, calls, cards and letters from. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Alamance Memorial Park with Rev. Randy Wellford, pastor of Stony Creek Presbyterian Church officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Altamahaw-Ossipee Volunteer Fire Department 2806 Old NC 87 Elon, NC 27244.
