Marvin Franklin "Poppie" Thomas, 83, passed surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several months of failing health. He was born in Randolph County to the late Marvin B. and Bessie Taylor Thomas and was married for 59 years to Julia Ann Freshwater Thomas who survives. He worked for Kayser-Roth Hosiery for over 40 years and was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict earning a Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with a marine artillery battery in Korea February 3, 1953. Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Robin Thomas of Graham; granddaughters, Kristi Anthony Farrell and Paige Jay Nixon, both of Graham; grandchildren, Kaleigh and Kole Farrell, Riley and Ryan Nixon; sisters, Pauline Cormosie Steele of Asheboro, and Nannie Purdy of Madison; brothers, Darrel Elaine Thomas of Stokesdale and Joe Wanda Thomas of Kernersville; and special friends, Lonnie Graves and Teresa Byrd. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 prior to the service and other times at the home his daughter, Robin, 326 Judge Sharpe Rd., Graham, NC 27253. The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to Dr. Gittin and staff and the nurses and staff at ARMC for taking such good care of Mr. Thomas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church c/o Family Life Center Building Fund, 4178 Mt. Hermon Rock Creek Rd., Graham, NC 27253.
