Martha Myers Lilly

Martha Elizabeth Myers Lilly, 98, left her earthly home and went to her heavenly home on October 17, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on November 11, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Hubert Grady Myers, Sr. and Martha Leanna Wilson Myers, and was the wife of 61 years to the late Robert Jefferson Lilly.

 Martha spent her youth in Pfafftown, NC and became a member of Pfafftown Christian Church at age 12. She graduated from Old Town High school in 1942 and went on to attend Atlantic Christian College (Barton College) in Wilson, NC for one year. Martha was a secretary at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Dept. of Internal Medicine in Winston-Salem for several years. On Sept. 18, 1948 she married Robert Jefferson Lilly and they were the proud parents of four daughters.

 She is survived by Martha Jeanne Griswold and husband Dr. Phillip, Susan Elizabeth Sowers and husband Michael, Carol Teresa Barnwell and husband Holton and Ann Maria Baker and husband Chuck; eight grandchildren, Dr. Mollie Griswold Lotakis and husband Dr. James, John P. Griswold and wife Rachel, Phillip A. Griswold, Julie Sowers Merrell and husband Brian, Emily Sowers Dye and husband Ernie, Maj. Alex Baker USAF and wife Krysta, Meredith Baker Hood and husband Tony and Joseph M. Baker; sixteen great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew. 

 Martha was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Hubert Grady Myers Jr, George W. Myers and wife Ruth. She was the last surviving great-grandchild of the Rev. Virgil A. Wilson, founding minister of Pfafftown Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.

 Martha was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, NC and then a charter member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church in Clemmons, NC. After moving to Burlington, NC in 1971, she joined First Presbyterian Church and her final church membership recently returned back to her home church, Pfafftown Christian.

 She shared with others freely that she had a “wonderful family” and that she loved each and every one dearly. Martha also loved her friendly Burlington neighbors and their sharing spirit. She enjoyed her ministry of sending cards daily and these cards will be missed by many.

 The memorial service to celebrate the life of Martha will be held at 11:00am Monday, November 11, 2024 in the Sanctuary of Pfafftown Christian Church, located at 3323 Transou Road, Pfafftown, NC 27040.
