Marion Smith, Jr.

Mr. Marion Radford Smith, Jr., age 78, of 3021 Moser Lane, died Thursday, July 30, 2009 at his home after several months of failing health. Born in Shelby County, TN, he was the son of the late Marion Radford Smith, Sr. and Carolyn Hunt Smith and was married for over 46 years to Mrs. Linda Jo Askew Smith, who survives. Mr. Smith retired from Western Electric after 16 years of service and later was employed with Alamance Foods. He was an U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Masonic Masters Lodge 244 AF & AM in Knoxville, TN, and a member of Alamance Lutheran Church. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Melanie S. Waldron and her husband, John; two sons, Marion R. "Rad" Smith III and Scott C. Smith all of Burlington; three grandchildren, Nicholas Sophie and Jarrett; a sister, Linda Carol Smith of Knoxville, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy Richard Smith. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Alamance Lutheran Church by the Rev. James D. Lockley. The family will receive friends following the service. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 Friday, July 31 at Alamance Lutheran Church Cemetery by Chaplain Elizabeth Yarbrough, Amedisys Hospice.
