Margaret Crowson Skinner, 81 years old, passed away on August 17, 2020 at Alamance Regional Medical Center-Cone Hospital, with her children by her side.
Margaret was born December 29, 1938 to Mary Lou Holt and Mortimer Crowson at Rainey Hospital in Burlington NC. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert W. Skinner. She is survived by her son Michael "Holt" Skinner of Burlington and daughter Cynthia (Cindy) Skinner also of Burlington. A beloved cousin James Holt Lasley Sr. (Libby) of Burlington and several special lifelong friends. She is also survived by a sister in law Margaret “Peggy” Skinner of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Affectionately known as “Maggie” she attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, Hillcrest School, Broad Street School and graduated from Walter M. Williams High School in 1956. She spent two years at St. Mary’s Jr. College in Raleigh before transferring in 1958 to the University of North Carolina where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and played girls field hockey. Margaret married Robert W. Skinner of Suffolk, Virginia in 1962. The couple met at a Williams High School football game while he was attending Elon University.
As a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church Burlington she served as both a Deacon and an Elder; she was a member of the D. J. Walker Sunday School class, treasurer for the Women of the Church, youth group leader and for over 20 years served as Superintendent of the Sunday School Department.
During her life she was a true southern Lady, accomplished athlete, supporter of the Arts, lover of history, good music, movies, books and beautiful flowers; she was an enthusiastic cook of southern cuisine. She was involved and participated in many social and civic activities. Her favorite and most accomplished passion was her love of horses. As a youth and young adult she competed as an equestrian in the ladies five- gaited class; she placed in many shows and multiple championships. Beginning her riding career in Burlington at the Alamance Barn and then the Alamance Saddle Club. Margaret was a devoted fan of the UNC Tarheels; particularly Basketball and Football.
In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker she was employed by the Alamance County School System (Elon College Public School) and the City of Burlington School System. As a teacher she was well liked and respected by her students and colleagues alike. For 25 years she was the owner and principle agent for M.W. Crowson Insurance Agency. Margaret took great pride in continuing the family business founded by her father in 1938. As a business person she followed the Golden Rule; was honest, fair and always held her clients in close regard and treated everyone with respect and integrity.
