Margaret “Hazel” Ammons, age 93, of York, Pennsylvania, entered into glory on January 11, 2025. Born in Caswell County, North Carolina to Lee Abner Miles and Rena Underwood Miles in 1931, Hazel was one of 11 children. Hazel was raised on a farm and knew the meaning of hard work. After marrying her lifelong love, Elmer Ammons, they relocated with their children to Carteret, NJ in 1954 where they built several successful businesses, including Logram-Eastern Electric Corporation. After many years living in Carteret, Hazel and Elmer built a home in rural Asbury, NJ, with a beautiful view of the Musconetcong Valley.
Hazel and Elmer dedicated their lives to spreading the gospel and were active in helping to establish Baptist churches in the NY-NJ metropolitan area, including Madison Baptist Church, Terrill Road Baptist Church and Bridgewater Baptist Church. It was not unusual for Elmer and his sons and crew to be onsite, volunteering their time and expertise in the construction of church buildings, most recently for Central Hunterdon Baptist Church in Flemington, NJ.
Hazel was a talented seamstress whose clothing, curtains and upholstery rivaled the work of professionals. She was a devoted mother to her four children, and a legendary cook. Christmas Eve always started with the feast at “Grandma’s” house and a reading from the Bible by the youngest child; her grandchildren still remember these celebrations fondly. Hazel remained close to her many sisters and brothers in North Carolina, and often spent summers with them when the children were young. She and her sister, Elsie Ammons, had a particularly sweet and close connection.
Hazel is survived by her children, Victor and his wife, Nancy of Hillsborough, NJ, Christian and his wife Pamela of York, PA, and Lisa Green of Easton, PA. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Elmer, their dear daughter Cheryl, as well as her son-in-law, James Green. Also surviving Hazel are her eight loving grandchildren: Daniel Ammons and his wife Jennifer; Rebecca Witte and her husband Brian; Jonathan Ammons and his wife Lindsay; C.J. Ammons and his wife Melissa; Michelle Kamprath and her husband Brian; Holly Navarro and her husband JC; Wesley Green and his wife Nicole; and Kayla Sharp and her husband Blake, as well 14 great-grandchildren. Hazel also leaves behind four of her ten siblings: Robert Miles, Elsie Ammons, Harvey Miles and Lois Lee.
Hazel was a Proverbs 31 woman who prayed daily for the family she loved so much.
