Mabel Pettigrew Mathews, 96, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at the Village of Brookwood. She was born on October 24, 1924 in Alamance County to the late J. L. and Mary Baldwin Pettigrew. She was married to the late Harold S. Mathews.
Mabel retired after many years of service from the State Legislature. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Raleigh. Her priorities included first her Christ and then her family. She enjoyed the beach, fishing and was an avid card player. Mabel loved holidays when with the Mooneyham family, especially with Jan and Barry (Debbie) Mooneyham and spending time at Carolina Beach with her Hilton family. Her family and friends will miss her fun-loving times spent together.
Mabel is survived by her daughter, Pamela K. Mooneyham, and husband Donald, of Castle Hayne; granddaughter, Katlin Mooneyham Dewitt and husband, Matthew, of Charlottesville, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her sisters: Treva Cobb and Ruby Lea; and brothers: James, Buck, and Grover Pettigrew.
A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at 3:00pm, Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Montlawn Memorial Park, at 2911 S. Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Elon, 621 E. Haggard Avenue, Elon, NC 27244. A special thanks is given to the many ladies for their visits to the nursing home and her Sunday School class there.
