Florida Mrs. Louisa Eugenia Elmore Jean Sykes, 91 years old and daughter of the late Eugenia Elizabeth Dawson and Terence Elmore of Bootle, England passed away this 21st day of February in the Year of Our Lord 2006, in Fernandina Beach FL after several weeks of declining health. Mrs. Sykes emigrated to Burlington, NC from Bootle, England in 1947, where she married her late husband, William Ernest Moose Sykes, and resided until moving to Fernandina Beach in 1998 to be with her sons. Mrs. Sykes was a WWII veteran of the British Royal Air Force, devoted wife and loving mother, who became a US citizen in 1956. Known as Jean by her family and friends, she loved traveling, air shows, homemaking and spending time with her family and friends. She last attended St Michaels Catholic Church in Fernandina Beach when her health allowed. Jean never, ever gave up. She will be missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Sykes is survived by her sons William Sykes of the home and LtCol Joseph Sykes, US Army, stationed at Ft Buchanan, PR, a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mylan and Ruby Sykes Pressnell of Burlington and nieces and nephews in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and England. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home, Friday, February 24, from 5 to 7PM. A mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Burlington, NC on Saturday February 25 at 12 Noon by Rev. Bob Benko O.F.M. Conv. Burial will be follow at the Sykes family plot in Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, NC. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, Burlington, NC, if desired.
