Burlington, NC Louis Joe Bateman died at the Hospice Home of Alamance-Caswell on April 25, 2013 after a brief illness. He was 88 years old. His wife of 64 years, Betsy Hamilton Bateman died on February 23rd, 2013. Joe served in the US Navy during WW II. He retired from A T& T now Alcatel-Lucent Guilford Center in 1989 with 38 years of service. He enjoyed sports, playing golf and mowing his large yard. He graduated from Campbell College where he played football and basketball and then graduated from Elon College. Joe was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elon. Survivors include his daughter, Bennie Bateman Catoe and friend, Bill Vincent; son, Steven Karl Bateman and friend Janice Oliver of Oak Ridge, daughter-in-law, Rhonda C. Bateman and granddaughter, Carlie Rae Bateman of Greensboro. Other survivors include two sisters, Clarice Wyatt of Burlington and Helen Hobbs of Wilmington, and one brother, Jack E. Bateman of Melbourne, Florida. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Berta and John Bateman, five brothers, James Arthur, Willie Bryan, Claude, Woodrow, and John Carl Bateman, and three sisters, Eunice Bateman, Ethel Bateman, and Ruby Boswell Wagner. The funeral service will be held on Saturday April 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Elon with Rev. C. Keith Sexton officiating. The service will be followed by military honors in the church Narthex. Following military honors a reception for family and friends will be held at the church. A private burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Alamance County Historical Museum, 4777 NC Hwy 62 South, Burlington, NC 27215.
