Linda D. Hayes, 76, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family in Burlington, North Carolina.
Born on November 26, 1948, to Vivian Hayes and Golas Hayes. Linda grew up in Greensboro, N.C. where she developed a deep faith, an unwavering commitment to education, and a legacy of service that touched countless lives. Linda attended Our Lady of Grace Catholic School and James B. Dudley High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Bennett College. She continued her studies at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she received a Master of Science in Library Science. Her career began in Washington, D.C., where she worked in Civil Service for the United States Department of Defense at the Pentagon. After several years, Linda returned to Greensboro, N.C. dedicating over 25 years to the Guilford County School System as a Librarian and Educator. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the International Association of Educators, the American Library Association, and other national organizations. Her life’s work centered on fostering education and creating opportunities for others to succeed.
Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Linda was a devoted mother to Michelle Smith-Hylton and a proud grandmother to grandson, Derrick “DJ” Hylton, II and bonus granddaughter, Anijah Hylton. She shared a special bond with DJ, celebrating every achievement and milestone with pride and joy. Her love for Anijah was equally boundless, cherishing the unique spark and light she brought. Linda’s unwavering support, encouragement, and wisdom left an indelible mark on their lives.
Preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Robert Hayes, Rudy Hayes, and Everett Hayes. Linda leaves behind her daughter, Michelle Smith-Hylton (Derrick Hylton); her grandson, Derrick “DJ” Hylton, II; bonus granddaughter, Anijah Hylton; close friends, James and Minnie Hylton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family who will deeply miss her love and guidance.
Linda’s life was a testament to perseverance, kindness, and faith. She believed in the transformative power of education, the importance of lifting up others, and the value of family. She created a home filled with love, laughter, and support; a legacy that her family and friends will carry forward in her honor. Though Linda has departed this earthly life, her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched. She was a light for her family and her community, and her presence will be felt in every act of love and service inspired by her example. Rest in peace, Linda, in the everlasting arms of the Lord.
