Julius Clay Turner, 98, of Greensboro went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 17, 2008 at Wesley Long Community Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Turner, formerly of Burlington had been a resident of Carriage House Assisted Living in Greensboro. He was born on January 14, 1910 in Schoolfield, Virginia, to the late Joseph E. and Toy Lee Turner. Julius founded and pastored Amazing Grace Tabernacle, which is today the home of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He wrote programs from the Bible, and enjoyed playing the piano and singing with his wife Elsie. Their most requested song was "Good Old Gospel Ship". Mr. Turner was a former employee of Burlington Mills Pioneer Plant, and then became a school guard for Alamance County for thirteen years. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elsie Shombley Turner of Carriage House; one daughter, Delores Turner Perry and her husband Charles, of Greensboro; a very special grandson, Chad Perry and his wife Robin, of Graham; three sisters, Virgie Turner Matherly of Burlington, Doris Turner Raines and husband Andy of Abington, VA, and Lorraine Turner Sheffield, of Torrance, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Paul Clayton Turner, Sr., Clyde Green Turner, Sr., Floyd Lee Turner, Sr., Joe Henry Turner, Edward B. Turner, Sr., and Charles Rayford Turner, Sr. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Reverend Terry Knighten. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and at other times at the home of Delores and Charles Perry, 2010 Bracyridge Rd., Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
