Joseph Marshall Bryant, 87, from the Anderson community of Caswell County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully Friday 19th 2019 at his home surrounded by family members.
Marshall was born in Carroll County, Virginia on March 31, 1932. He was married for 63 years to his sweetheart
Hilda Stainback Bryant who survives. He was the only son of nine children to the late Jonathan Byrd Bryant and Susie Mabe Bryant. Marshall was an honorable military draftee from 1954 to 1956, serving as a military policeman during the Korean Conflict. He received the U.S. Army's Good Conduct and National Defense Service medals, receiving the rank of SP3.
Marshall graduated from Anderson High School in 1950. He operated and owned Bryant's Exxon service station in Burlington for over 40 years. He was a faithful, lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Caswell Ward, serving in many leadership positions in the church. He loved flounder gigging, fishing, hunting, gardening and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After he retired, he was able to take his children and grandchildren on many wonderful family vacations. He had a close individual relationship with each of his grandchildren and loved them all dearly. In the last few years of his life, Marshall took on the role of caregiver for Hilda when she was diagnosed with dementia.
He was generous person and was known for doing many acts of kindness within his family and community. In addition to Marshall’s wife Hilda, survivors include a daughter, Teresa Bryant Gentry, and her husband, James, of Burlington; a son, Allen Dwayne Bryant, and his wife, Tabby, of Anderson Community; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 21, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Caswell Ward by Bishop Dwayne Bryant and Bishop Vernon Massengill. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1- 2:45 PM Sunday prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence.
