Burlington, NC Joseph Graham Suggs, age 73, of Graham-Hopedale Road went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2008. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 19 years to Gala Lambeth Suggs who survives. Graham retired from A T & T after 31 years and was a longtime member of Glen Hope Baptist Church. He was a member of the Friends Sunday School Class where he served as the song leader for over 15 years. Graham was active in the church serving over the years as a Deacon, Trustee, Assistant Choir Leader and member of the choir for over 51 years. He also sang with the Goldstar Quartet at Glen Hope for many years. Graham had a heart for missions and evangelism making seven mission trips to Vermont and serving with the visitation outreach of Glen Hope Baptist Church. He and his wife, were actively involved with the Alamance County Senior Adult Activities. Graham had many hobbies and he loved the Lord and his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandson. Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Mitch Brooks of Prospect Hill, Cynthia and Michael Kernich of Sterling, Virginia, Sharon and Gary Milholland of Mebane, Pam and Greg Smothers of Graham; step sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Charlene Lewis of Anderson, Wayne and Robin Lewis of Cerro Gordo; thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert "Bob" and Mazie Suggs of Raleigh, Cecil and Ann Suggs of Graham; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Mercer of Charlotte and Jean and Henry Harrison of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Betty Jean Carter Suggs; step son, William Thomas Lewis; parents, Andrew Lee and Doshia Addie Moody Suggs; brother, Andrew Lee Suggs, Jr. and a sister, Dorothy Parsons. A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Glen Hope Baptist Church by Rev. Larry Redding and assisted by Rev. Jim Wrenn and Rev. Billy Haselton and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Monday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home.
