Joseph Ackerman

Burlington, NC Joseph Eugene Ackerman, age 87, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at Edgewood Place at the Village at Brookwood. He was a native of Newark Valley, New York and the husband of 65 years to Cora "Jean" Cornett Ackerman who survives. Joseph retired from IBM after 45 years and was a member for over 65 years of Owego United Methodist Church in Owego, New York where he served as head usher, operated the sound system and was an assistant Scout Master. He served as a Medic with the US Navy during WW II and was a Mason with the Friendship Lodge # 153 in Owego, NY. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Survivors his wife of 65 years, Cora "Jean" Ackerman of the home; sons, Richard Ackerman and his wife, Dale of Bahama, NC and William Ackerman and his wife, Michele of Badin Lake, NC; grandchildren, Chris Ackerman, Beth Childs, Brice Ackerman, Julie Hiatt, Thomas and James Ackerman; 7 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Daisy Kidder Ackerman and several sisters and brothers. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Bahama by Pastor Grace Hackney
