Mr. Jon Robert “Big Paw Paw” Hughes, age 74, of Burlington, passed away suddenly on Monday, February 15, 2021 at his residence.
Born in Oakland, CA, he was the son of the late Robert Bronner Hughes and the late Katherine Schmitt Hughes and was married for over 52 years to Karen Lambert Hughes, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Columbus CG-12. Mr. Hughes was a salesman with S.C. Johnson, B.P-Castrol and Quali-Chem before his retirement in 2012. He was a member of St. Mark’s Church for over 50 years and served as a Youth Counselor and was instrumental in starting the Dimes Ministry. He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time on his boat and with his family.
Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife of the home; his daughter, Kristi Hughes Younts and her husband, Scott; two grandchildren, Zachary Robert Smith and Peyton Elizabeth Smith, “adopted grandchildren”, Trevor Hendricks, LeeAnn Cobb, Dinh Truong, Kelsey Long, Grayson Bowes and Grant Bowes; god children, Hunter Tipton and Nikki Baity; a sister, Linda (“Wally”) Wallace; two brothers, Michael (Laurie) Hughes and Patrick (Heather) Hughes; sister-in-law, Lynda Hughes; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kim Hughes; his mother-in-law, Erma Lambert; and his fur babies, “Sam” and “Maggie”.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, February 19, 2021 at St. Mark’s Church by Rev. Bob Disher. The family will receive friends in the church atrium one hour prior to the service.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Miller and his staff and special friends, Gayl Edmondson, Vickie Byrd, Bob Maffeo, Elizabeth Byars and Robert Harris for their love and care of Jon over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the giver’s charity of choice.
