Burlington – John Allen Thompson, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at his home. A native of Alamance County, he was born December 21, 1937 to the late Robert Edgar and Geneva Lou Dixon Thompson and was the husband of 22 years to Patricia Ann Mitchell Thompson of the home.
John was very proud to have served in the US Marine Corps. He received his GED at age 56 and was a longtime and faithful member of Glen Raven Baptist Church where he began singing with the Dixon Family and the Thompson Family. He also enjoyed playing baseball, softball and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; son, Allen Robert Thompson; stepdaughter, Wendy Winn and husband Todd; granddaughter, Brittanie Allen Thompson; step grandchildren, Tabitha Whitesell and husband Jeff, Brandon Childers; step great grandchildren, Ashton, Makenzie and Ava Whitesell; sister, Eva Caldwell; brother, Robbie Thompson and wife Betty and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edwina Hughes.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Glen Raven Baptist Church by Rev. Bobby Fann with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Thompson will be available for viewing from 9am-4pm on Friday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. The family will receive friends at the son, Allen’s home and the stepdaughter, Wendy’s home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
