John Powell

Burlington - John Robert Powell, 79, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. A native of Franklin County, VA, he was born January 26, 1937 to the late Walter Lee Powell, Sr. and Ethel Woodyard Powell. He was the husband of 10 years to Brenda Whitaker Powell of the home.
John was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church and was the owner/operator of John's Concrete Inc. where he later retired.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Frederick Lewis Powell (Jean), Richard Neal Powell (Diana), Jonathan Lawrence Powell (Jenna) and his mother, Judy Powell; daughter, Lori Anne Curtis (Donald); step-son, Scotty Merritt; grandchildren, Jennifer Tillman (James), Brooke Curtis, Kelli Curtis; step-grandchildren, Austin Merritt, Anna Merritt; great grandson, Nicholas Tillman; brothers, Marvin Powell (Lois), Douglas J. Powell (Cathy) and sisters, Ruth Lazenby and Ethel Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Altice, Catherine Law, Elsie Wigginton, Jennetta Prillman and brother, Walter L. Powell, Jr.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00am, Friday, October 14, 2016 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Elizabeth Lazenby with the entombment to follow at Lakeview Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 9:30am-10:45am prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
