John Walker Dawson, Sr.

John Walker Dawson, Sr.,90, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at the Hospice Home after several months of failing health. He was a native of Guilford County and the son of the late Edward Bethea and Katie Lee Scoggins Dawson. He was the husband of Barbara Jo Dawson for 64 years who survives.

John retired after 36 years with Sears and was a US Army veteran serving in Germany during peacetime. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Elon where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 54 years. He was a member of the choir, soloist, youth leader, RA Leader, supply pastor, deacon, former chairman of the deacon board and custodian for many years. John also loved missions and went on a mission trip to Brazil. He was an avid golfer, Dallas Cowboy, Duke and Yankees fan. John never met a stranger and was proud to be an Ambassador for Christ. He was proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionally called him “PaPa”,

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jo Dawson of the home; sons, John Walker Dawson, Jr. and wife, Julie of Burlington and Steven Bethea Dawson and wife, Melanie of Gibsonville; grandchildren, Jessica (Blake) Jordan, Robbie (Erika) Dawson, Stephanie Dawson and Caroline Dawson; great grandchildren, Ivy Grace Jordan, Lincoln Miles Jordan, Storm Olivia Dawson and Summit Alexander Dawson and a sister, Shelby Jean Summers and husband, Johnny of Gibsonville. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Thomas and Sidney Dawson.

The funeral service will be held 11:30am, Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Elon by Dr. David Durham and Pastor Robbie Dawson. The burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm Friday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home.
