John M. Cooke

John Malcolm Cooke, 81, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 15, 2024 at the AuthoraCare Collective Hospice Home in Burlington.  He was born in Bertie County on June 7, 1942 to the late Robert Glenn Cooke, Sr. and Hazel Spencer Cooke and was the husband of 61 years to Betty Lou Beale Cooke of the home.

John was an active and caring individual in various facets of life and was treasured by many. He served for ten years as a NC State Trooper, before retiring and opening his own mechanics shop called “The Automotive Clinic”. His love for cars, trucks, and motorcycles, extended into his home life as he enjoyed riding his Harley and fixing his cars and trucks at home. John was extremely valued in his neighborhood as he always enjoyed helping neighbors in any way he could and, of course, gave the neighborhood dogs some extra love during his walks. In addition to his daily walks, he enjoyed being active every day, rain or shine, by riding his bike, completing yard work, or exercising. John’s favorite place was on the beach or in the ocean while visiting Oak Island with his beloved wife Betty. He was also a Mason and a member of Brookwood Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; daughters, Candace Butterworth and husband Blake, Julie Wolfe and husband Larry Wolfe, Jr.; grandchildren, Jacob Wolfe, Kaegan Butterworth and August Butterworth; two brothers and extended family.

A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 3:00PM on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Garry Baldwin.  The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
