John Atkinson

John Edward Atkinson, age 96, of Elon passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the Veterans Home in Salisbury. A native of Punxsutawney, PA, he was the son of the Thomas Edwin and Mary Roose Atkinson and husband of the late Alice Mae Bish Atkinson and Faye Robinson Atkinson who survives. Mr. Atkinson was a retired insurance agent with Prudential Life Insurance Co., a member of Ossipee Baptist Church, and an Army Veteran of WWII. He was an avid golfer and played golf into his 90's. Survivor include his wife, Faye Robinson Atkinson of the home; sons, Richard Thomas Atkinson and wife Judy of Johns Creek, GA, Robert Morris Atkinson, Alfred Hunter Atkinson, Dennis George Atkinson and Ben David Atkinson and wife Judy all of Greensboro, Frank Edward Atkinson and wife Barbara of Las Vegas, NV, and Bruce Darwin Atkinson and wife Adelle of Morehead City; step daughter, Amber Herford of Burlington; brother, George Walter Atkinson of Punxsutawney, PA; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter; step niece, Judy Demchak of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; sister, Mary E. Keller and granddaughter, Amy. Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, April 27 in the Ossipee Baptist Church by Rev. Jason Wilkerson, pastor. Interment will follow in Westminster Garden in Greensboro. The family will receive friends at Ossipee Baptist Church from 12:30 to 1:45pm Friday, April 27, 2012, prior to the funeral service.
