Jerry Garland "J.J." Johnson, 81, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Wesley Long Community Hospital after seven months of failing health. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Norma Arey Johnson and son of the late Hubert and Lennie Erwin Johnson.
"J.J." retired from the Burlington Fire Department as Assistant Chief after 32 years of service. He loved spending time with his family, playing golf and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Johnson Swiggett and special friend, Richard Horner; grandchildren, Julia Hope Swiggett and fiancé, Michael Garner, Matthew Nicholas Swiggett, Nathan Dallas Swiggett and wife, Julie Williams-Swiggett, Scott Ashley Swiggett and fiancé, Jandy Jones and children, Haliee and Graylyn; father of grandchildren, Dale Swiggett; great grandchildren, Grant Hawthorne Swiggett and Audrey Reese Swiggett; and a sister, Mary Lou Piper and husband, Ellis.
The funeral will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastors Bryan Rainbow and Howard Thompson. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends with a reception from 12:00-1:45 Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home.
