Jean Whitt Long, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at the age of 98. Born on May 4, 1926, in Person County, NC, to Harry Clifford Whitt and Kate Steele Whitt, Jean led a life that was rich in love, devotion, warmth, and resilience.
Jean began her career at Glen Raven, Inc. in 1961, where she dedicated herself to the purchasing and shipping departments for over three decades until her retirement in 1992. Her colleagues quickly recognized her as a remarkable lady, one whose loyalty and kindness left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Her true legacy, however, lies in the love she harbored for her family. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome in her home, a quality that stemmed from her warm and loving personality. Jean was known for upholding family traditions, particularly during Christmas, a time she celebrated exuberantly with her loved ones while cooking and sharing recipes. Her home was a gathering place for family, filled with warmth and laughter, embodying the spirit of togetherness that Jean fostered throughout her life.
She loved all children, especially babies, and was a devoted animal lover. A loyal friend, Jean's affection extended beyond her family. She formed many lasting friendships through her time at Glen Raven and also at Front Street United Methodist Church where she was a long-time member. Those friendships enriched her life, as well as those of her friends.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, William "Billy" Coleman Long, Sr., her daughter, Nancy Long McElroy, and her sister, Nell Whitt Barrow Caskey. Their memories will forever linger in the hearts of her family, who carry forward the traditions and values she instilled.
Jean is survived by her son, William Coleman Long II and wife Patti; grandchildren, Ryan Long and wife Natalie, Jonathan Long and wife Erin, and Whitney McElroy Love and husband Donta; great-grandchildren, Vaden, Brighton, A.J., Grady, and Emerie; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Barbara Perry and Martha Lee Marvin.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held on Friday, September 13 at Front Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
Jean will be missed dearly, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness, and in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know her love.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Collective Hospice, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215 or www.authoracare.org.
