Jayruther Hopkins was born February 2, 1945, in Spartanburg, SC to parents Margaret Nettie Applin Hill and William J.C. Hill. Jay was the 2nd oldest of five children, however, her siblings will tell you that although not the oldest, Jay was the boss.
Jayruther married Arthur Washington Hopkins on March 19, 1966. They lived in New York City, Los Angeles, CA, and Middletown NY before settling down in Cortlandt Manor, NY. After retiring the family moved to Durham, NC.
Jay worked for 30 years as a financial analyst for Kraft Foods. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Mercy College while still raising her children and working, she graduated Phi Theta Kappa making us all very proud.
Jay was a Sunday School Teacher and Financial Secretary for the Board of Trustees for Star Bethlehem Baptist Church in Ossining, New York. She loved attending bible study and Sunday service. Jay enjoyed fellowship with her church family, listening to gospel music, and the sound of a good church choir.
Jayruther liked to watch soap operas, read romance novels, work jigsaw puzzles, play cards with friends, shop, eat, and yes travel. Jay loved to travel with family. Not only did she see the U.S. and our national parks. She was fortunate enough to travel the world and visit places like the Caribbean, China, Egypt, Gambia, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Senegal, Turkey, to name a few.
On the morning of February 20th, Jayruther was called home to be with our lord. She passed peacefully in the presence of her children and grandchildren and surrounded by love.
She is survived by
Children Timothy and Aimee, Kevin, Jodie.
Grandchildren Spencer and Danielle, Nia, Ashley, Kristian.
Great-grandson Sammy.
Her siblings Joyce and Nathanial, Walter, Theresa, William II and Deborah, George and Veronica.
Nieces and nephews Janice, Christal and Kareem, William III, Candice and Jason.
Great nieces and nephews Jafel, Marcus, Michael, Isabella.
Great nephews Jakai, Jayce.
