Janet Martin Winstead, 71, passed away on Wednesday, August 7th at 2:15pm at the Hospice Home after several months of failing health..
Born on April 25, 1948 in South Carolina, she was adopted as an infant by John and Emma Hall Martin of Greenwood, South Carolina. She grew up in Roxboro in Person County, North Carolina. A pianist for her church and high school, she worked at Cole’s Pharmacy for 8 years during high school and college. A 1966 graduate of Roxboro High School, she attended East Carolina University for 1 year, and Elon University for the next 3 years. In 1967, she married her high school sweetheart, William C. “Bill” Winstead, to whom she was married for 53 years. Mrs. Winstead served as organist and choir director of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Elon in the early 1970’s. A member of Front Street United Methodist Church since 1976, she sang in the choir for many years. After graduating with honors from Elon University in 1970, she was employed by the Burlington City Schools and was a piano teacher for many years. She owned and operated the first private Kindermusik school in the United States, starting in Burlington in January 1977 until 1990. Mrs. Winstead obtained a master’s degree in music education from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and resumed her teaching career. She was active in many civic and educational organizations locally and nationally, serving as President of the Alamance County Piano Teachers Association and as President of the Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority. In 1984, she and her husband started Travel Reservations, Inc. in Burlington, NC and were known for customized group tours and cruise destinations all over the world. The first groups consisted of just a few couples which grew over the years to hundreds of people who became “life-long friends”.
Mrs. Winstead is survived by her beloved husband, William C. “Bill” Winstead Jr. of Burlington; her son, William C. “Chip” Winstead and his wife, Leslie Coble Winstead; and her grandson, William Aidan Winstead.
Visitation will be held at Lowe Funeral Home on Friday, August 9th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
A private family burial will be held at a later date.
I cannot express enough my gratitude for all of the staff at the Hospice Home and palliative care who gave my Dad and myself so much support and assistance. The Compassion and caring they all showed toward my Mom and the incredible care they provided her in her last few days was absolutely incredible.
