Janet Elizabeth Mildern Gray, wife of the late Bruce William Gray and daughter of the late Herbert and Louise Mildern, passed away on December 19, 2024 at the age of 85. She was the sister of the late Frances and (Norbert) Nassel, Ruth and (Arthur) Armitage, Alford and (Wilma) Mildern, Caroline and (William) Smith, and Herbert and (Agnes) Mildern. She is survived by daughters, Sharon Huffman and Darlene and (Ron) Tickle, and son, Timothy and (Jeanette) Gray, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Jan was born in upstate New York where she lived for many years. She graduated from Barrington College and became a registered nurse. She spent her early nursing career working on a Navajo reservation in Gallup, New Mexico before meeting and marrying her husband of 50 years and eventually relocating to Durham, North Carolina. She continued her nursing career in Durham, raised her family and was an active member of Peace Presbyterian Church. Jan spent the last three years living at Oak Creek in Burlington where she made many friends, enjoyed the trips and activities that were offered, and was a frequent visitor at Graham Presbyterian Church. Jan was known for her cooking, knitting, and unwavering service to others. She immensely enjoyed her pets, camping, and attending her grandchildren's' sports activities and performances. She will be fondly remembered as a caring mother, devoted wife, doting grandmother, and faithful servant.
A memorial service will be held on February 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Presbyterian Church, 6114 Russell Road, Durham, North Carolina. She fought the good fight. She has finished the race. She kept the faith.
