Burlington-James “Jim” Lawrence Bridges, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Hospice Home. He was the son of the late Alphonso “AC” Cleatus Bridges and Blanche Edna Greene Bridges. He was the husband of 65 years and 8 months to Bobbie Warren Bridges who survives.
Jim worked for Kayser- Roth Corporation for many years and later retired from GKN in Mebane. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and attended Elon College before serving in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Jim played minor league baseball and was the coach for many years of the Glen Hope Baptist Church Men’s Softball team. He was a longtime member of Glen Hope Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, choir leader and led the congregation for many years. Jim was blessed with his musical ability and his love for Southern Gospel music led him to sing for many years with the Glen Hope and Kingsway Quartets. He was an avid Tar Heel fan and member of the Ram’s Club for over 50 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, salt water fishing and boating and spending time at the coast with family and friends. Jim had many hobbies including model railroading, RC Model Planes and Classic Ford Mustangs. In 1984 he donated his kidney to his brother, Pete. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie W. Bridges of the home; daughters, Susan (Rick) Faulkner of Graham, Janie Petardi of Columbus, Ohio, Arlene (Kent) Thompson of Graham and Jimmi Anne (Scott) Johnson of Statesville; grandchildren, Jenna (Jesse) Wood, James Petardi, Stefan (Kirsten Collins) Faulkner, Brigett Faulkner and Trevor Johnson; sister-in-law, Betty Bridges; Aunt, Agnes Yoos and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Hughes and a brother, Charles “Pete” Bridges.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice and Palliative Care for their kind and compassionate care for Jim.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 2:00PM at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bob Stephenson. The burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery with military honors by the US Air Force. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45PM prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the home.
