James Winn

Altamahaw James Harvard Winn, 88, of 3090 Cherokee Dr., Altamahaw, passed away Monday, July 13, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Altamahaw to the late Jennings Bryan Winn and Beatrice Simpson Smith, and was the husband of late Maydell Bayliff Winn. Mr. Winn retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy, where he served more than 37 years, proudly fighting for his country in World War II. He was a member of Berea Christian Church and was also a former employee of Baker Cammack. Survivors include his daughters, Cindy Reese and husband Tony of Elon, and Kathy M. Winn of Altamahaw; sons, Jim Winn and John H. Winn and wife Virginia, all of Elon; grandchildren, Jason Winn, Austin Winn, Wendy Joyce, Toby Winn, Dawn Williams and husband Paul, John Winn, Jr., Sonny Winn, and Dillon Reese; great grandchildren, Caitlin, Emily, Gabriel, and Graci; as well as several half-brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one half-brother and one half-sister. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Wall and Dr. Charles Phillips for the special care they provided to Mr. Winn and also to Tina Wrenn and Hospice of Alamance-Caswell. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Berea Christian Church by Rev. Bland Leebrick, Jr. and Rev. David Franks. Interment will follow at Berea Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lowe Funeral home and at other times at the home. Memorial may be made to Berea Christian Church Mission Fund, 2828 Old NC Highway 87 Elon, NC 27244, or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
