GIBSONVILLE- James Webb Smith, 87, of 407 NC 100, died Friday, January 6, 2006 at Durham Regional Hospital after one week of failing health. A native of Orange County, he was the son of the late Alson C. Smith, Sr. and the late Fannie Finley Smith and was married to the late Christine Isley Smith who died in 1997. Mr. Smith was the former owner and operator of Regal Dry Cleaners and several other laundrymats in Burlington for over 50 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was a member of St. Marks Reformed Church, where he held several different positions over the years. He was a former member of the Board of Directors for Welcome Finance and was a member of Alamance Country Club. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing with his family and friends. Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Linda Dodson and her husband, Don, of Gibsonville; two grandchildren, Kimberly D. Cavanaugh and Melony D. Maness; a great grandson, Evan Winfield Cavanaugh; and a sister, Julia Rudd of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; four sisters; and seven brothers. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Monday, January 9, 2006 at the St. Marks Reformed Church Atrium by the Rev. Ben Bishop. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-6 Sunday afternoon at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., #999, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220 or to St. Marks Reformed Church, 1230 St. Marks Church Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
