James Rankin Thomas, age 82, of 118 Alamance Rd. formerly of Herron Rd., Whitsett passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Hospice Home. A native of Guilford County, he was the son of the late Harper Jennings and Cordie Shepherd Thomas and husband of Beverly Thompson Thomas who survives. James was a charter member of Gibsonville Evangelical Methodist Church and an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. He served for 34 year with the postal service with the last 12 years as postmaster in Whitsett. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Beverly Thompson Thomas of the home; sons, Rev. Steven Thomas and wife Jean of Greenville, SC, Jimmy Thomas and wife Ruth of Ridgeway, VA, Dennis Thomas and wife Patricia of Whitsett and Greg Thomas and wife Pam of Graham; brothers, Kent Thomas and wife Lea of Gibsonville and Coy Thomas and wife Carol of Haw River; sister, Syble Yancey and husband Winfred of Mebane; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Winfred Thomas and sisters, Carleen Thomas and Guinevere Isley. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, May 24, 2014 in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Paul Speagle. Interment will follow in the Gibsonville City Cemetery. Mr. Thomas will remain at Lowe Funeral Home through the funeral service. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12:30 until 1:45, prior to the funeral service. The family would like to thank the staff of The Home Place of Burlington for the special care given their husband and father.
