James Lawrence Swanger, Jr., 89, went home to see Jesus on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born April 24, 1929 in Canton, NC to the late James Lawrence Swanger, Sr. and Annie Capps Swanger and was the husband of 70 years to Rebecca Marlene Swanger of the home.
James was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War and was employed with AT&T/Western Electric for 33 years before retiring. He was a longtime member of Peoples Memorial Christian Church where he sang bass in the choir and had a never ending supply of Wrigley gum for anyone who would ask. "PaPaw", as many would call him, was known for his quick, witty remarks and funny (but corny) jokes. He enjoyed watching westerns, shooting pool, meticulously caring for his lawn and LOVED Dr. Pepper. It was clear he enjoyed life and possessed a strong work ethic. Most of all he cherished the time he spent with family and didn't hesitate to spoil his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Papaw will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
James is survived by his wife, Marlene; sons, Darrell Swanger (Karen) and Bobby Swanger (Linda); grandchildren, Angie Davis, Michael Swanger (Ashley), Jamie Johnson (Travis), Regina Nall (Seth) and Hannah Swanger; great grandchildren, Morgan and Madison Davis, Karlee Johnson, Peyton and Gracin Nall, Leigha, Leighton, Madden, McKinleigh and soon coming Lawson Swanger. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janice Rebecca Swanger; sisters, Edith "Fan" Buchanan, Mamie Baldwin, Edna Burton and Lea Walker; brothers, Joe, Cliff and Glenn Swanger; one half sister and three half brothers.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Peoples Memorial Christian Church by Pastor David Grinnell and Rev. Bobby Fann with a private burial to follow. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30pm on Friday at the church and other times at his home.
A special thank you to the Hospice Nurses for their loving care shown to James during his transition from this life to the next.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
