James Haywood Mincey, 94, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at White Oak Manor. He was born December 28, 1925 in Durham County to the late James Edward and Frankie Carlotta Wilkerson Mincey was married to the late Ellen Louise Page Mincey for almost sixty-six years. Mr. Mincey was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of WW II. He served in the Army Airways Communications System as a Direction Finder Radio Operator in both Guam and Tinian in the Pacific Area. He graduated in 1950 from Duke University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Honorary Engineering Society Tau Beta Pi.
He was a charter member of Northside Baptist Church, a former Adult Sunday School Director and an Honorary Life Deacon. Before retiring on December 31, 1999, Mr. Mincey was employed by the AT&T system for over thirty-nine years. During this time he worked successively for Western Electric as an engineer for anti-aircraft radars, missile guidance radars and their test equipment; for Bell Telephone Laboratory as a design engineer for missile guidance systems; and for Western Electric as a senior test planning engineer for undersea systems.
He is survived by his children; David Mincey (Phyllis), Betty Anne Shearin (Sidney); grandchildren, Ian Mincey, Laura Feimster, Margaret Cumberland, Elyse Riner and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and a son, James Fulton Mincey.
There will be a private funeral service at 1:00 PM Saturday. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Mincey will be available for viewing 12:00 – 5:00 PM Friday at Lowe Funeral Home.
