On February 24, 2025, our beloved James Stephen “Steve” Lynch, aged 75, transitioned peacefully from this world, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever. Born in Alamance County to the late George Thompson Lynch and Audrey Mariam Lemons Lynch, Steve's heart belonged to his wife of 17 years, Betsy White Lynch, with whom he shared countless memories.
Steve dedicated three decades of his life to the Burlington Police Department, where he ascended from officer to detective at the tender age of 24, ultimately holding the esteemed positions of Sergeant Detective, Lieutenant, and Captain. His quest for justice began after he graduated from Eastern Alamance High School in 1967, leading him to serve with the FBI in New York City, working amid the hallowed halls of the Justice Building during J. Edgar Hoover’s tenure. He valiantly served in the Army during the Vietnam War as a member of the Airborne Infantry, a chapter that added depth to his character and commendable service.
After retiring from law enforcement, Steve brought his wealth of knowledge to the Alamance County District Attorney's Office for eleven years. His passion for Criminal Justice flourished as he educated and inspired students at Alamance Community College for over 22 years. Steve was more than a devoted educator; he was a distinguished 33rd Degree Mason, a revered member of the Masonic Eagle Lodge #19 in Hillsborough, member of the Long Leaf Pines and a proud Kentucky Colonel. His efforts were honored when he received the Joseph Montfort Award in 2015 for his contributions to the community.
Steve had a zest for life that was evident in his love for travel, particularly to New York City and the ambiance of Times Square, a place that captivated his adventurous spirit. Equally, he was a passionate historian, cultivating a remarkable collection of artifacts that reflected his deep appreciation for the past.
In addition to his beloved wife, Betsy, survivors include his brother, Marshall Lynch and his wife Michelle; his sister, Phoebe Cole and her husband Larry; along with several cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nurturing paternal grandparents, George Thompson Lynch, Sr. and Phoebe Stone Lynch, who imparted invaluable lessons about faith and family, as well as his maternal grandparents, Chandler Lemons and Eurie Harris Lemons.
The celebration of Steve’s remarkable life will take place at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Mebane United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Gene Cobb and Rev. Jim Jones, followed by burial at Oakwood Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 12 noon to 5:00 PM at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and at other times at the Lynch residence.
