An obituary eloquently written gives us the highlights of a person's life and allows our memories to fill in all the missing pieces. We feel the sadness and burden of death as it strips us of the life we cherished so much. Yet, we are allowed this opportunity to view in words one's life accomplishments and celebrate the existence that made us better, happier, loved and protected.
God, Country, Family, Sports, and Service are the descriptions we use today to create the visual of the life and death of James Dennis Jones. Dennis went home to heaven on August 25th, 2018. His most prized possession was his relationship with Jesus Christ and serving his Lord at First Baptist Church of Whitsett. For nearly 30 years he served the church in many capacities as well as serving as the minister of music alongside his Preacher, friend, and brother-in-Christ Tim Stevens.
Dennis was born on March 16th, 1947 in Greensboro, NC to James Henry Jones and Eunice Brown Jones. He was a proud 1965 graduate of Gibsonville High School where his love of sports allowed him to letter in both football and baseball. Upon graduation, Dennis served his country in the United States Army and spent 13 months as an ammunition specialist in the Vietnam war. From his return and honorable discharge to the day of his death, he was a proud Vietnam veteran and patriotic supporter of all military men and women.
In times of darkness and death the family grieves because of the lasting impressions that were implanted during life. Dennis left those footprints through his dedication as a family man while defining sacrifice, leadership, and love. Recently, he celebrated the 48th year of marriage to Elma Ree Durham Jones. Dennis was a devoted husband that worked hard to provide for his family for 32 years at Rego until his retirement in 2013. There was nothing that could bring a brighter smile to this big joyful man's face than the simple thought of his two boys, James Dennis Jones Jr. (Jamie) and Kevin Brian Jones. Dennis was once asked, "What is the single accomplishment in life that you are most proud of?" and if you knew him to no surprise with proud tearful eyes and a glowing smile his response was simply, "My two boys". He cherished every opportunity to watch his boys play sports but relished the responsibility to teach them how to become men. An avid sports family, you may have seen Dennis and the boys on the golf course or screaming at the TV during a Tar Heels basketball game. His love of sports was an avenue to instill the the important life lessons from father to son.
Lastly, James Dennis Jones leaves behind
a legacy of service. In order to serve, one must be able to conduct themselves as a servant, not to their own needs but unto others. Dennis served his God, church, country, family, employer and friends with unconditional love. In his later years, the gleam in his eye was to serve as a "Paw Paw" to Jackson and Mac Jones.
We know that these are merely highlights and a life as special as this can not be encapsulated in these short words. Today, our hope is that as our minds are flooded with memories we are reminded that because of Dennis we are better, happier, and forever loved.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 48 years Elma Ree Durham Jones, brother Spanky Jones and wife Sandy, two sons Jamie and Kevin Jones, two daughters in law April and Grace Keener Jones, two grandchildren Jackson and Mac and third grandson Carter's expected arrival in October, along with several nieces and nephews. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Eunice Jones, brother Kenneth and son James Anthony Jones.
The celebration of his life will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 29th at the First Baptist Church of Whitsett by Rev. Tim Stevens. Interment will follow with military honors in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 PM Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. and at other times at the home.
