James Harris

James Walker "Jim" Harris, 62, of 2526 Cambridge Road, passed away Friday October 3, 2008 after a lengthy illness. A native of Pulaski County, Arkansas he was born to Alexander Everett Harris and Alma Fletcher Walker, both deceased. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He graduated from Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri, and later from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, AR. He received his masters degree from New York Institute of Technology. He served in the US Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years of service. He served in Vietnam, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star, among multiple other decorations. Jim was also a contributing writer in the food section for the Burlington Times-News. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife Miriam Wood Harris, his son James Walker Harris, II and wife Nicole, of Egg Harbor Township, NJ and their children Samantha, Rebecca, and James, III; a daughter Robyn Dudas and husband Chris of Norfolk, VA and their children Ashley, Sean, Elizabeth, and Grace; his brother Everett Harris and wife Shirlene of Little Rock, AR; as well as his step mother-in-law, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Very Rev. Robert Benko, OFM Conv. VF, Rev. Gerry Waterman, OFM Conv., and Rev Paul Gabriel, OFM Conv. The family will receive friends from 3-5 pm Tuesday, October 7 at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, and at other times at the home. A prayer service will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made to the Knights of Columbus LAMB campaign, C/O Brian Knowles-Jonas, LAMB Director, 112 Georgetowne Drive, Elon, NC 27244.
