James Hall

James Alexander Hall, 95, of 1430 Shallow Ford Church Rd., Elon, passed away November 14, 2018.

A joyful man of God, James was devoted to his family. He was the beloved husband of Irene (Sis) Hensley Hall, to whom he was married for 72 years. He is survived by Irene, one son, Danny Hall and wife Helen, and one daughter, Sherry Snodgrass and husband Mike. He has four grandchildren: Jason Hall, Renah Snodgrass Mitchell, Nathan Hall, and Mandi Snodgrass Hofmann. In addition, he found great blessings in his eight great-grandchildren: Mia Hall, Thomas and William Mitchell, Nathan and Louis Hall, Chaz and Daylyn Walker, and Amelia Hofmann. The son of the late Walter Thomas and Flossie White Hall, he is survived by one sister, Lucy Williamson and two sisters-in-law, Betty Mae Hensley and Lucille Hensley. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bell Hensley, and his brothers, Walter "Pete" Hall, Charlie Hall, Billy Hall, and Adrian Hall.

James treasured his Shallow Ford Christian Church family, and the people of his church always held a special place in his heart. He served many years there as head usher and a Trustee, and he was a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class as well. He was an active participant in many of the church's community outreaches, including serving as a former Boy Scout leader of the Shallow Ford Scout Troop. In addition, he stirred many pots of Shallow Ford Brunswick stew, always one of his favorite times of the year! James was a charter member of Shallow Ford Squares, and he and Irene enjoyed square dancing with them for more than 40 years.

He was a U.S. Army combat veteran of World War II, serving with Company L 142nd Infantry
from 1943 to 1945. He received 5 bronze service stars for his outstanding service: Normandy,
Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He also served as part of the
Engineering Corp. during his tour of duty.

James was co-owner of Hensley Hosiery Mill. He also enjoyed antique buying, selling and
trading, and he especially loved collecting clocks and watches. He loved his garden, which
always produced the biggest vegetables in the neighborhood, a feat that he took great delight
in. He was fond of playing the guitar and his favorite song was "Goodnight Irene," which he
loved to play often for his wife. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a contagious smile, and a
joyful outlook on life. And yes, now he really is getting better every day!

James was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother,
and uncle, a man who will be missed by everyone who knew him. He loved all of his large family and his wonderful friends and neighbors, including his caretaker Pricilla Woods. He really never met a person he didn't like! His enthusiastic spirit and happy outlook on life are comforting treasures.

The funeral will be held Saturday November 17th at 2pm at Shallow Ford Christian Church by
Rev. Steve Regan. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends
on Friday November 16th 5:30-7:30 PM at Shallow Ford Christian Church and at other times at the home.
