James Denton, Jr.

James C. "Jim" Denton, Jr., 89, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family. He was a native Cherokee Indian and the husband of the late Nannie Lucille Cooper Denton. James was a retired Senior Master Sergeant serving 24 years with the US Air Force. Jim served in three wars, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, receiving a bronze star while in Vietnam. He began his career with the US Navy as a Seabee and later joined the Air Force and became a proud member of the 819th Red Horse Squadron. After retiring from the service, he enjoyed working on his farm along with his wife, Lucille. Jim attended Glencoe Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and proud member of the Shriners. Jim was very supportive in helping raise donations for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Survivors include his stepdaughters, Connie Smith of Burlington, Bonnie Hawkins and husband, Ken of Eden and Cheryl Massey and husband, Darrell of Burlington; grandchildren, Tammy Larry Grondin, Brandi Edward Mould, Johnathan Bambie Massey and Caleb J. Massey; great grandchildren, Steven Gammon, Aaron and Schaefer Grondin, Zoe Mould, Willa Cate Mould and Malachi Massey; nieces and nephews, Jerry Howell, Tina Dennis Lunsford, Hal Wendy Capps, Martin Missy Capps and Dolores Hayworth and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Craig Denton, Sr. and Bessie Denton and sisters, Betty Capps, Francis Lynn, Ann Howell and Lillie Hayworth. A service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at Glencoe Baptist Church by Rev. Darrell Massey. Mr. Denton will remain at Lowe Funeral Home until being taken to the church where he will lie in state prior to the service. The burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors by the US Air Force. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the farm, 1526 Haw River Hopedale Rd., Burlington.
