Burlington

James Bernard Stanley Evans, 86, of Burlington, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at his home surrounded by his children and their spouses. He was born in Onancock, Virginia to the late Bernard Cecil and Elizabeth Tunnel Evans. James was the loving husband of 62 years to the late Kay Parker Evans who was born and raised in Johnston County, NC.

Raised on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, James loved fishing, hunting, growing his own vegetables and being near the water whenever possible. He was the 1956 football king of Onancock High School, a proud United States Marine Corps veteran who was placed on reconnaissance missions due to his expert rifle ranking, an honors graduate of Old Dominion University where he majored in Criminology, and a retired Virginia State Police Trooper and Detective. He was an avid reader of history and enjoyed studying astronomy, as well. James lived in Rocky Mount, NC with his wife Kay for 30 years and faithfully served the Rocky Mount community. His Rocky Mount neighbors enjoyed his generosity in feeding the neighborhood vegetables from his garden and his always kind demeanor who offered help to anyone in need.

James is survived by his daughter, Mary Martin, and her husband, Michael, of Whitsett, NC; his son, James Michael Evans, and his wife, Robbi, of Chapel Hill, NC; his brother. Ted Evans, and his wife Janet of McHenry, Illinois, and numerous relatives in Virginia Beach, VA who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Parker Evans; his grandson, John Michael Martin, his sisters Jacqueline Sewell and Nancy Evans, and his brother, Robert Evans.

A private family service will be held in Virginia Beach to remember and honor James' life, one marked by continually giving to others. In lieu of flowers, and to help future families in need of elder care, the family requests a donation be made to Happier Days Private Duty Services, LLC, 422 Huffman Mill Road, Suite 102B Burlington, NC 27215.
