Burlington, NC Jack C. Oakley, age 79, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of 55 years to Carla Sharpe Oakley who survives. Jack retired after 37 years with Duke Power in Burlington, He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elon and a member of the Men's Bible Class and the Methodist Men. Jack was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean War. He was an avid Duke fan who enjoyed coastal fishing and supporting Western Alamance High School football where both his son and grandson played. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Carla Sharpe Oakley of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Jeff Gilliam of Burlington; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Pam Oakley of Elon; grandchildren, Meredith and Allison Gilliam, Martin, Bethany and Sarah Morgan Oakley. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha Mae Oakley. Jack's family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and nurses of the 1st floor of ARMC and the staff and nurses of Hospice. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church-Elon by Rev. Terry Huffines and assisted by Rev. Randall Innes. The committal service will follow at Alamance Memorial Park by Rev. Reid Dickens and Layman Eric Rudd with military honors provided by the 82nd Airborne Division. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm on Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. The Men's Bible Class is asked to be honorary pallbearers for the service.
