Burlington, NC Isaac Flay Steelman, age 94, formerly of Bland Boulevard went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 31, 2010 at Edgewood Place. He was a native of Yadkin County and the husband of the late Hazel Aileen Knight Steelman. Flay retired after 31 years with Kayser-Roth Hosiery. He was a longtime member of Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church and member of the Immanuel Sunday School class. Flay was a lifetime Deacon and served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee and taught Sunday school for many years. Flay was the last surviving member of the Courtney High School class of 1935. He was very active in the Boy Scouts for many years serving with the troop committee of Troop 5 at Northside Baptist Church and later with Troop 22 at Hocutt Memorial Baptist Church. While in scouting he was honored with membership in The Order of the Arrow! Flay was an avid Carolina Tar Heels fan and enjoyed going to Chapel Hill to see football and basketball games, as well as going to the bowl games back in the 1980's. He was a loving and devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his sons, John K. Steelman and William F. "Bill" Steelman of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Melanie Steelman of Graham and grandchildren, Mia Renae Steelman and Evan Taylor Steelman both of Graham; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, Isaac William and Cornelia Reavis Steelman; brothers, Howard, Vernon, Thad, Bronson and Lloyd Steelman. The family wishes to express our appreciation to Dr. Michael Blocker at Burlington Medical Practice and to the nurses, CNA and staff at Dogwood Terrace of Edgewood Place for the care given to Flay these past two years. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Jimmy Nickelston and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home.
