Mrs. Irma Ruth Fogleman King Straughn, age 91, of Burlington, passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several weeks of failing health.
Born in Guilford County, she was the daughter of the late Early Lewis Fogleman and the late Norvie Huffman Fogleman and was married to the late Leonard Claude King, Sr., who passed in 1967 and then was later married to the late Linwood R. Straughn, who passed in 2018. She was a lifetime homemaker and was a longtime member of Altamahaw Baptist Church, where she sang in a trio and was a member of the choir. Ruth loved to play the piano, sing and dance. She was a true reflection of Proverbs 31, a virtuous woman and she was known for her wonderful smile.
Mrs. Straughn is survived by her children, Irma Jean Hopkins and husband, Mark, Diane Mitchell and Leonard Claude King, Jr. and wife, Angie, all of Burlington; seventeen grandchildren; thirty eight great grandchildren; eleven great great grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Brown of Whitsett; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husbands; parents; three children, Walter Gerald King, Kenneth Ray King and Roy Vance King; and five sisters, Faye Loy, Lucy Moore, Eunice Simpson, May Clapp and Ola Overman.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 30, 2019 at Altamahaw Baptist Church by Dr. Steve Tucker. Interment will follow at Gilliam’s Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Thursday evening at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at her daughter, Jean’s residence.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Altamahaw Baptist Church Building Fund, 3445 Altamahaw Church St, Elon, NC 27244.
