Irene Laverne Thomas McMasters

January 22, 1925 — January 9, 2025

Gibsonville

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laverne Thomas McMasters, 99 years old, a cherished mother, grandmother, and faithful member of her community. She was born on January 22, 1925 in Alamance County to the late James Robert Thomas and Nellie Mae Hailey Thomas, and was the wife of 50 years to the late Edward William McMasters who died in 1993.

Laverne dedicated many years of her life as a cashier with Winn Dixie, where she greeted each customer with a warm smile and kindness that touched all who crossed her path. She enjoyed visiting the beach and reading her bible daily.

A former member of Glen Raven Baptist Church, Laverne found her spiritual home and lasting connections at New Hope Baptist Church where she has been a longtime member. There, she shared her love for God and her community as a Sunday school teacher, imparting wisdom and nurturing the faith of numerous children.

Laverne leaves behind her son, Edward Daniel “Danny” McMasters, along with her grandchildren, Tim Baswell and wife Amanda, Cheryl Neville and husband Greg, Raeonda Buirl, Angel Burk and Tillina Slayer and 13 great-grandchildren, each of whom were a source of love and pride in her life. She now joins her beloved parents, James and Nellie Thomas; her husband, Edward William McMasters; her daughter, Ingrid Laverne Robertson; and her brothers and sisters in eternal peace.

A graveside service to celebrate Laverne's remarkable life will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Alamance Memorial Park in the mausoleum, by Pastor Randy Hobbs. Prior to this service, the family invites friends to gather and share their memories from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to New Hope Baptist Church at 1525 Flora Ave., Burlington, NC 27217, to honor Laverne’s legacy of faith and community service.

As we remember Laverne, may we carry forward her spirit of generosity, kindness, and love for family and friends. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. You may send condolences to www.lowefuneralhome.com
