Mr. Hugh Davis Nelson, age 72, of Wilkins St., Burlington, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015 at his home after a lengthy illness. A native of Caswell County, he was the son of the late Jack Davis Nelson and the late Estelle Hayden Nelson and was married for over 51 years to Mrs. Janie Irby Nelson, who survives. Hugh was a retired Captain with the Burlington Fire Dept. with over 30 years of service and was instrumental in starting the retired fireman's breakfast. He was the former owner of Nelson Insulation Co. and was a member of Eastlawn Baptist Church. Hugh's hobbies included being active in all sorts of sporting events, but loved watching his sons and grandchildren play. He enjoyed fishing, which led to fish fries for the community and his friends. He was an active volunteer, especially with Burlington Assembly of God, and went on many mission trips to help build churches from Western United States to Canada. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Jeff Nelson and wife, Kathy, of Mebane and Tim Nelson and wife, Renee, of Climax; five grandchildren, Sean Nelson and wife, Whitney, Shane Nelson and wife, Erica, Kelsey Nelson, Kaitlyn Nelson and Allie Nelson; two great grandchildren, Cameron Nelson and Colt Nelson; a brother, Wallace Nelson and wife, Bobbie, of Prospect Hill; and two sisters, Peggy Oakley and husband, Dwight, of Cedar Grove and Judy Lunsford and husband, Bonnie Ray, of Roxboro. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, April 17, 2015 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Steve Joyner and Rev. Howard Thompson. Interment will follow in Cooper Family Cemetery in Prospect Hill. Members of the Burlington Fire Department are asked to sit as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Nelson will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory through the funeral service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 Thursday evening and at other times the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastlawn Baptist Church, 432 N. Sellars Mill Rd., Burlington, NC 27217 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
