Mr. Hubert Owen Campbell, 86, of Yanceyville passed away at his home on Thursday, April 13, 2017. A native of Caswell County, he was married for 68 years to Magdalene Reagan Campbell, who survives, and was the son of Weldon Lee and Ollie Boswell Campbell and the grandson of Thomas MacNeal and Annie King Campbell.
A lifelong farmer at heart, Mr. Campbell - known as ‘Salty Dog' to those who grew up or worked with him in his younger days - worked for years as a textile machinist and fixer, and was recognized as a valued and hard-working employee by the management and ownership of the companies at which he was employed.
He lived his entire life on the same farm in southern Caswell County on which he was born and raised, and enjoyed nothing better than working with the land. He was known for his gardening and apple orchard, and shared the bounty of his work with many friends and neighbors over the years.
As a member of Oakview Church, located within walking distance of his home, Mr. Campbell served as an Elder of the church, and his strong faith and commitment to God's word was evidenced by his extensive knowledge of the Bible, his humble manner, and the way he quietly and appreciatively lived each day of his life. Always ready with an easy smile and pleasant demeanor, he was a well-respected member of his community, a true friend to all who met or knew him, and will be sorely missed and forever remembered by those left behind.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Frances, who died as an infant, and a brother, Roger Lee Campbell. He is survived by a sister, Annie Elizabeth Rudd.
Mr. Campbell and his wife were blessed with three children: Owen Dianne Campbell Byrd (Hal), Jeffrey Brent Campbell (Debbie), and Tracy Lynnette Campbell Chandler (Dwight). He also has seven grandchildren: Amanda Byrd Shaw (Matt), Joanna Byrd Stoner (Charlie), Ashley Elizabeth Byrd (Rodolfo), Emily Campbell Cox (Rodney), Jeffrey Brent Campbell, Jr., Reagan Chandler Gural (Casey), and Emma Chandler Cook (Jayce); and nine great-grandchildren: Campbell Shaw, Marlie Shaw, Rachel Stoner, Jackson Stoner, Ruben Sanchez-Byrd, Florence Sanchez-Byrd, Chandler Gural, Colson Cook, and Caleigh Cook.
The funeral service will be conducted at Oakview Church, Oakview Loop Road, Yanceyville, NC, on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 3pm, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after the service and at other times at his home.
