Howard Odell Small, 83, affectionately known to many as "Odell" or "Pud," was born on February 6, 1942, in Guilford County and departed this world on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the Hospice Home, surrounded by his loving family. He led a life rich in love and kindness, leaving behind a legacy that will surely endure in the hearts of those who knew him.

Odell's career as a Foreman with A-B Fab, Inc. spanned many years, where he earned the respect of his coworkers and a steadfast dedication to his work. Beyond the fulfilling of his career, he served his country proudly as a Navy veteran, skillfully working as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. The values he developed during his service remained dear to him throughout his life, as did his commitment to family.

He attended Brightwood Christian Church throughout the years, where he found fellowship and a sense of community. Odell was drawn to the gentle strength of horses, like riding and showing horses, and pouring love into teaching his granddaughter about these magnificent creatures. Odell enjoyed staying active with his hobbies, planting a garden, farming and woodworking filled his days with creative endeavors that brought him much satisfaction. He was also an avid NASCAR fan, finding joy in car races and the thrill of Blue Angels Air Shows. Odell’s adventurous spirit led him to travel with family, discovering the Grand Canyon and creating memories that would last a lifetime. In quieter moments, he enjoyed watching Old Westerns, finding comfort in the tales spun by both cowboys and storytellers alike. His heart sang for many things, but none so much as the joy found in spending time with his family.

Odell is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda Truitt Small, with whom he shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, his cherished children, Ann Marie Small Brady and her husband Michael, David Matthew Small and his wife Theresa, and Tracy Small Cheek and her husband Brandon. His grandchildren, Taffany Howell, Tevin Cheek, Tyler Small, Megan Small, and Ashlynn Cheek, brought him pride and joy, while his great-grandchildren, Payton, Kamille, Kingston, Princeston, and Oaklynn, his warm spirit and wisdom will continue to shine through them. Odell is also survived by his sister, Sandra Small; brothers, John Small and his wife Glenda and Terry Small and his wife Julie; and many nieces and nephews, including two special nephews, Jerry Small and Ed Small, who enriched his life in special ways.

He has reunited with his family members that have preceded him in death, his parents, Walter Troxler "Bud" Small and Margaret Lucille Boone Small; a son, Howard Daniel "Danny" Small; and his siblings, Lynn Small and Peggy Wright.

Howard Odell Small’s journey through life was defined by love, devotion and zest for sharing experiences with those he cherished. As we gather to celebrate his life, we reflect not only on his passing but the enduring legacy of joy and family he leaves behind.
